Job Description

The Los Altos Family YMCA is looking for Swim Instructors.  Swim Instructors are responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas by creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Must have current Swim Instructor Certification.  

Part time positions available. Hours range from 2 -8pm (evening 3-7 preferred) and weekend hours. Must be able and willing to work  Monday-Thursday.

Responsibilities will include:

Swim Instructors

  1. Ensure a safe swimming environment for all participants.
  2. Prepare for and teach all assigned classes. The use of lesson plans, session plans and evaluation sheets may be necessary.
  3. Ensure scheduled shift is covered at all times.
  4. Test and evaluate students at east twice during the swim session. With supervisor assistance, issue progress reports to all students. 
  5. Must be suited, on deck and ready to perform all duties during assigned shift.
  6. Follow and enforce safety standards, policies and procedures.
  7. Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required by Supervisor.
  8. Maintain open lines of communication with participant, coaches, referee, staff and supervisor.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
  10. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.

Skills / Requirements

    1. Must be at least 16 years of age, over 18 years of age preferred.
    2. Current certification for: Required to have Swim Instructor Certification, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED (Red Cross or YMCA). Emergency Oxygen is preferred. Certifications must be maintained and kept in current status.  Water Safety Instructor (Red Cross) or Fundamentals of Teaching YMCA Swim Lessons preferred.
    3. Public relations skills and/or experience working with a diverse population desired.
    4. One or more years of experience teaching swimming lessons in an aquatics facility.
    5. Criminal Fingerprint clearance, Health Screening with Negative TB and Negative Drug test screening.  
    6. Complete Online New Employee Orientation/Child Abuse Prevention training.

    Working Conditions:

    Environmental Factors: Indoor and outdoor facilities (e.g. childcare and recreational sites); exposure to heat, cold, potentially hazardous chemicals, toxic materials; work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Noise level is usually moderate.
