YMCA Camp Oakes, located in Big Bear City,  is looking for a Seasonal Summer Program Staff to facilitate programs for various groups of youth throughout the summer.   Come spend a summer in beautiful Big Bear, CA. (2 hours east of LA, 3 hours south of Vegas) Sitting at 7,400 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains.

We are seeking summer staff to run program areas-(Archery, High Ropes, Life Guarding, Arts and Crafts, Canoeing, Fishing, Astronomy, Air Rifles, Low Ropes, Climbing Wall, etc.)  Working at a youth camp can be one of the toughest, yet one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever undertake.  The ability to work as part of a team is critical to all staff positions. Staff will be working closely with co-ed staff, acquire new outdoor skills as well as “people skills”, reap the benefits of healthy living in an outdoor environment and gain new experiences that will last a lifetime. Program Staff will be trained to supervise in the following areas on the basis of experience, ability and interest: archery, BBs, fishing, astronomy, canoeing, swimming, crafts, gold panning, high and low ropes challenge course, zip line, hikes and more.  

Room and board are provided in a group living setting.We will train. 11 week contract starting at $374 a week. Staff training begins May 30 and our summer ends mid-August.  

Essential Functions:

  1. Supervise participants in the summer day camp programs.
  2. Notifies immediate supervisor of all incidents and when supplies are low and needed.
  3. Assist / responsible for all cabin activities as assigned.
  4. Inspect activity areas, ensure no hazards are present and set boundaries and the safety and well being of the participants.
  5. Ensures that respect for the backgrounds, and needs of all participant and staff are integrated into both program planning and implementation.
  6. Maintain positive role model and attitude.
  7. Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required by Supervisor.
  8. Maintain open lines of communication with Branch Directors, Lease Group Leaders, participant, staff and supervisor.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills / Requirements

Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Must be at least 18 years old
  3. First Aid and CPR certification required
  4. Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
  5. Experience working children preferably in a camp setting
  6. Outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills
  7. Must pass criminal background check including fingerprints
  8. Complete a health exam to include TB test and Negative Drug Test Screening 
  9. Complete New Employee Orientation and Child Abuse Preventative Training

Working Conditions:

Environmental Factors: Indoor and outdoor facilities (e.g. childcare and recreational sites); exposure to heat, cold, potentially hazardous chemicals, toxic materials; work on slippery or uneven surfaces.  Noise level is usually moderate to loud. While in this position the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places.
